Cllr Colleen Atkins appointed as Deputy Speaker

At the Annual Full Council meeting held on Wednesday evening (15th May), Colleen Atkins, Labour Councillor for Harpur Ward was appointed Deputy Speaker of Bedford Borough Council.


A long-standing councillor who was first elected in 1988, Colleen has served on many committees during that time and has also held a number of portfolios including Community Safety, Regulatory Services & Housing.

 

Colleen is presently Chair of the Environment & Sustainable Communities Overview & Scrutiny Committee, and also serves on the General Purposes Committee and the House of Industry Estate Management Committee.

 

Nominating Councillor Atkins, Councillor Carl Meader, Bedford Borough Labour Group Leader, said: “I was pleased and proud to nominate Cllr Atkins for the role of Deputy Speaker. Colleen is a respected councillor and has served the residents of the Borough for many years. I know she will be a diligent Deputy Speaker and continue to serve the residents of Harpur Ward and the rest of the Borough whilst carrying out her formal duties to highest standard.”

 

Seconding the nomination, Bedford Borough Labour Group Deputy Leader Sue Oliver added “Colleen is an experienced Councillor, who will do her utmost to assist the Speaker to ensure council meetings run smoothly.”

 

Councillor Atkins said, “It’s an honour and a privilege to be appointed as Deputy Speaker and I thank everyone for their support in nominating me.”
